You can be fired for any reason whatsoever in an at-will state. They don’t have to give a reason for firing you. All the power is in the hands of the Salem broom co est 1692 shirt. No. You can’t. Federal law applies everywhere. I’m not aware of any state that doesn’t have at-will employment OR that doesn’t cover some groups from discrimination in employment. Stop spreading misinformation. Groups federally protected from discrimination in employment are sex, race, age, disability, color, creed, national origin, or religion. Unfortunately, being an LGBTQ is not protected. ReTHUGs make sure of this and refuse to offer protection under Law. This is one of the reasons the reTHUGs/evangelicals pushed Kavanaugh onto the SCOTUS, even though is totally unqualified for the position. They are about to make it official and permanent, just like Iran. A more accurate term is No Rights States, which honestly, all states in this shithole corporatocracy are. Of course, the Federal government passes a law, everyone feels good, but the real world is much different, obviously. I know employers and managers like to throw that “At Will” clause around. But it’s as long as it’s not retaliatory, nor discriminatory against a protected class. It also means employees don’t have to give the old standard 2 weeks notice to avoid a negative reference. And I think that the Warn Act is still in place mandating severance pay when a particular percentage of employees are terminated over a particular number of weeks. That said, the social fallout of being outed as an anti-gay could cost that employer some big contracts.
